Belarusian authorities detain hundreds for violating order during referendum

MINSK, February 28. /TASS/. Belarusian law enforcement officers apprehended about 800 people for violating public order on February 27, the country’s Interior Ministry reported on Monday in its Telegram.

"About 800 people were detained for various violations of public order throughout the country. Currently, an investigation is being carried out to provide a legal assessment of their actions," the ministry said.

The Belarusian Interior Ministry stated that "despite the numerous calls to destabilize the situation that were disseminated by citizens outside the country through destructive telegram channels, mass protests failed to transpire." Police offers provided a swift response, foiling all provocations.

That said, 78.63% of eligible voters took part in the referendum ballot on introducing amendments and additions to the constitution on Sunday. "Over 80% of the Belarusians who cast their ballots supported amendments to the Constitution of Belarus," the CEC pointed out.
