US-Taliban agreements not working so far, says Russian delegation to SCO meeting

Russia has stressed the importance of constant consultations between SCO member states in order to avoid the spread of instability to the SCO space

DUSHANBE, July 14. /TASS/. An escalation of tensions in northern Afghanistan shows that the agreements between the US and the Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia) are not working so far, the Russian delegation to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers Council said on Wednesday.

Sources in the Russian delegation informed that the situation in northern areas of Afghanistan, including the mass "exodus" of the Afghan people to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, "shows that the pledges between the US and the Taliban movement documented in the agreement dated February 29 of last year in Doha do not work so far".

The delegation pointed out that the US is mulling the opportunity to relocate its military objects from Afghanistan to Central Asian states. Sources note that the expectations that the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan will be accompanied by ensuring security in the country have not been met.

According to sources, the Russian delegation stated that "the Americans are concerned over the fate of the Afghan citizens affiliated with them, and the relocation of its military objects to Central Asia from Afghanistan," and that they are "actively mulling the possibility of solving these issues". Russia has expressed concern over the risks that "the plans of involving Central Asian states in inter-Afghan clashes" entail, if the US plans are implemented in any form.

In these conditions, Russia has stressed the importance of constant consultations between SCO member states in order to avoid the spread of instability to the SCO space.
