No evidence of Russian meddling in US elections, says Lavrov

Lavrov added that he handed over to his US counterpart a copy of the article published in 1987, which warned about the Soviet potential meddling in the 1988 presidential election in the United States

SOCHI, May 14. /TASS/. There is no specific evidence of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election in the US, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters at a joint news conference with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

"The facts show that there is no evidence whatsoever of meddling in the US election," the minister stressed.

Lavrov added that he handed over to his US counterpart a copy of the article published in 1987, which warned about the Soviet Union’s potential meddling in the 1988 presidential election in the United States.

"By the way, the article mentioned for the first time the political ambitions of then successful businessman Donald Trump," he added.

"The meddling issue can be discussed indefinitely, but as long as we have no specific evidence on the table, we will not be able to discuss this issue in earnest," Lavrov concluded.
