Zelensky needs to dismiss government, Ukrainian opposition leader says

Viktor Medvedchuk said that the chances for an early parliamentary election were small because the parliamentary election campaign would begin in late July

MOSCOW, April 22. /TASS/. Dismissing the parliament should be a priority task for Vladimir Zelensky who has won the Ukrainian presidential election, Chairman of the Political Council of Ukraine’s Opposition Platform - For life party Viktor Medvedchuk said on Monday.

"Although under the Constitution, the government resigns only after a new parliament is elected - and it won’t happen before the end of the year - he will need to take every measure to dismiss the cabinet. He has opportunities and reasons to do it," Medvedchuk pointed out.

At the same time, he said that the chances for an early parliamentary election were small because the parliamentary election campaign would begin in late July. "It is hardly possible to dissolve the Rada [parliament] and call an early election in the remaining time," he explained.

However, in Medvedchuk’s words, the current parliament may choose to cooperate with Zelensky if he takes a principled and consistent position, pointing out that as president, ne needs to control the legislative authority "to accomplish the tasks that such a great number of people have supported."

Ukraine’s presidential runoff took place on April 21. With 99.68% of the vote counted, leader of the Servant of the People political party Vladimir Zelensky has received 73.21%, while incumbent President Pyotr Poroshenko gained 24.46%.
