Crimean leader sees bleak future for Ukraine after presidential debates

He described the debates as a "free circus show"

MOSCOW, April 19. /TASS/. The head of Russia’s Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said he saw a bleak future for Ukraine after Friday’s debates between Ukrainian presidential candidates Pyotr Poroshenko and Vladimir Zelensky.

"Judging by the debates, there is nothing good to be expected for Ukraine," he told the Rossiya-24 TV channel, describing the debates as a "free circus show."

"None of the candidates gave a direct answer to any of the questions. Regrettably, this is how things are done in the Ukrainian politics today," Aksyonov added. "There was no perspective, no glimpse [of light]."

The Crimean leader also said he regretted the present state of affairs in the Russian-Ukrainian relations.

The runoff of Ukraine’s presidential elections is scheduled for April 21 and will feature head of the Servant of the People party Vladimir Zelensky going up against incumbent President Pyotr Poroshenko. The first round took place on March 31 and saw Zelensky receiving 30.24% of the votes, almost twice as much as Poroshenko, who got 15.95%.

Earlier on Friday, the candidates already faced each other during an electoral debate at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium in front of a crowd of 22,000 viewers.
