Russian involvement in Libyan conflict regulation does not serve any purpose — US diplomat

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya stated earlier that Russia does not support any side of the conflict and calls for national reconciliation in Libya

NEW YORK, April 15. /TASS/. The US is against Russia’s involvement in Libyan conflict regulation, US Acting Assistant Secretary of State David M. Satterfield stated on Monday during a briefing in Brussels.

"We do not believe that Russian involvement in this conflict serves any useful purpose," he said. "It is an external meddling which we hope comes to a close as rapidly as possible. It’s opportunistic. It attempts to capitalize upon gray areas, conflict areas, and little good is served by it."

Currently, Libya has two supreme executive authorities, namely Tripoli’s government of National Accord recognized by the international community and headed by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, and the interim government headed by Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani, which operates in the country’s east along with the elected parliament and is supported by the Libyan National Army.

On April 4, Field Marshal of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar announced the launch of an offensive against Tripoli. Sarraj ordered all military units loyal to him to gear up to defend the capital. The warring factions are currently involved in battles along the outskirts of Tripoli.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya stated earlier that Russia does not support any side of the conflict and calls for national reconciliation in Libya.
