US seeks to control secretariats of international organizations, says Lavrov

The Russian top diplomat believes Washington and its allies seek to take control of the secretariats in order to push decisions bypassing intergovernmental consultations

MOSCOW, April 12. /TASS/. Washington and its allies seek to take control of the secretariats of international organizations in order to push decisions bypassing intergovernmental consultations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at his annual meeting with students and professors at the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Academy.

"The United States and its closest allies - the British and some others - are in fact making attempts to privatize the secretariats of international organizations, place their representatives there and control secretariat officials from countries on which they can put pressure in order to make the world believe it is the secretariats that put forward certain ideas that actually would not be accepted at international negotiations, while they concern very important issues," he said.

The Russian top diplomat pointed out that as a result, the US had managed to push its plan of action to prevent violent extremism through the United Nations Secretariat. According to Lavrov, the document says that extremism begins where authoritarian regimes shut down democracy and human rights so the international community should go over the heads of those governments to build relations with civil society.
