Sudanese army dissolves parliament and suspends constitution

A military council was established following the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir

CAIRO, April 11. /TASS/. The Sudanese military has suspended the nation’s 2005 constitution and dissolved the parliament, government and local authorities, Sudanese First Vice President and Defense Minister Lieutenant General Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf said in a statement that was broadcast on Sudanese state TV on Thursday.

"As the Defense Minister, I hereby declare that the former regime headed by Omar al-Bashir has been toppled. The president is safe and is in our custody," Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf said. It was also announced that the Presidential Council had been dissolved.

According to him, a military council was established following the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir. A three-month nationwide state of emergency has been declared in Sudan.

The lieutenant general pointed out that the judiciary branch continues to operate as usual, including the Prosecutor General and the Constitutional Court.

Following the coup staged on Thursday, the army announced that Sudan’s air space would be closed for 24 hours, along with all border crossings "until further notice."
