MOSCOW, April 11. /TASS/. Ecuador has received guarantees from Britain that the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, who was detained by the London police on Thursday, will not be extradited to a country where he might face capital punishment, President Lenin Moreno said.
"I requested Great Britain to guarantee that Mr. Assange would not be extradited to a country where he could face torture or the death penalty. The British government has confirmed it in writing, in accordance with its own rules," Moreno said.
Important background for journalists covering the arrest of Julian #Assange by Ecuador: the United Nations formally ruled his detention to be arbitrary, a violation of human rights. They have repeatedly issued statements calling for him to walk free--including very recently. pic.twitter.com/fr12rYdWUF

Assange has enjoyed asylum in the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012. In this way he tried to prevent his extradition to Sweden, which had issued a warrant for his arrest on sex crime charges. Assange’s worst fear was that Sweden might deport him to the United States, where he might face a prison term of up to 35 years or the death penalty for publishing classified documents of the US Department of State.
