G7 alarmed by deployment of Russian military experts to Venezuela

The ministers also call upon the international community to collectively take a strong, principled stance to help the Venezuelan people achieve a peaceful solution to the worsening crisis

PARIS, April 6. /TASS/. G7 foreign ministers voiced their concern on Saturday over the deployment of Russian military personnel to Venezuela, the ministers said in a joint communique after a two-day ministerial meeting in Dinard, France.

"We are alarmed by the deployment of Russian military forces which threatens to exacerbate the already dangerous situation," the communique says.

"We also call upon the international community to collectively take a strong, principled stance to help the Venezuelan people achieve a peaceful, democratic and sustainable solution to the worsening crisis," it adds.

Juan Guaido, Venezuelan opposition leader and parliament speaker, whose appointment to that position had been cancelled by the country’s Supreme Court, declared himself interim president at a rally in the country’s capital of Caracas on January 23. Several countries, including the United States, Lima Group members (excluding Mexico), as well as the Organization of American States, recognized him as president. In contrast, Russia, Belarus, Bolivia, Iran, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Syria and Turkey voiced support for Maduro.
