Venezuela hit by another large-scale blackout — paper

The cause is yet to be established

CARACAS, March 30. /TASS/. A significant part of Venezuela was left without electricity again, with power outages reported in 21 out of 22 regions, the Nacional newspaper reported on Friday.

The cause of the blackout is yet to be established.

Earlier, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido called upon his supporters to protest the frequent power outages in the country.

The Venezuelan capital of Caracas and 20 of the country’s 23 regions were first left without electricity on March 7. The National Electric Company said the blackout had been caused by an accident at the Simon Bolivar Hydroelectric Plant, which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro blamed on "US imperialism." However, the US Department of State denied any involvement.

On Monday, Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez said that Venezuela had once again been left without power following an act of sabotage at the same HPP. He blamed the incident on the government’s opponents.

The political crisis in Venezuela intensified after Venezuelan parliament speaker Juan Guaido, whose appointment to that position had been cancelled by the country’s Supreme Court, declared himself interim president at a rally in the country’s capital of Caracas on January 23.
