Trump to sign decree recognizing Israel’s sovereignty on Golan Heights - Israeli official

"Tomorrow, President Trump, in the presence of PM Netanyahu, will sign a decree recognising Israel's sovereignty on the Golan," Reuters quoted Israel Katz

MOSCOW, March 24. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump is to sign on Monday a decree recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, Israel's Acting Foreign Minister Israel Katz was quoted by Reuters as saying in a tweet on Sunday.

"Tomorrow, President Trump, in the presence of PM Netanyahu, will sign a decree recognising Israel's sovereignty on the Golan," Reuters quoted Israel Katz. "Israel-U.S. ties are closer than ever," he said.

Earlier, Trump tweeted that after 52 years it’s time for the US to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of strategic and security importance for it. Russia, Germany, Iran, Syria, France and others condemned such unilateral steps. On March 25-25, the US leader will receive the Israeli prime minister at the White House.

The Golan Heights, which belonged to Syria since 1944, were seized by Israel during the six-day war in 1967. In 1981, the Israeli parliament passed a law to unilaterally declare sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The UN Security Council declared the annexation null and void in its Resolution 497 of December 17, 1981.
