Poroshenko’s declared gas independence costs dearly to Ukrainians — opposition

Between 2013 and 2018, all utility tariffs skyrocketed by 745% on average

MOSCOW, March 24. /TASS/. The people of Ukraine have to pay "stratospheric prices" for President Pyotr Poroshenko’s declared independence from Russian natural gas supplies, opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk said in Russia’s TV Center broadcast on Saturday.

"According to president Poroshenko, we are ‘no longer addicted to Russian gas.’ He is proud of this. But there are millions of citizens who became impoverished, who suffer from unbearable [utility] tariffs and have to pay stratospheric prices," he said.

"For example, between 2013 and 2018 all utility tariffs skyrocketed by 745% on average, including gas prices growing by 1,080%, and central heating and hot water - by 1,220%," he said.

Earlier on Saturday, Poroshenko lashed out at opposition politicians Yuri Boyko and Viktor Medvedchuk, leaders of the Opposition Platform - For Life party, for their visit to Moscow where they held talks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. "They are discussing the economy. They are discussing how to make Ukraine addicted to Russian gas again. They are even discussing the alliances which will be set up after presidential and parliamentary elections," Poroshenko said.
