UN position on Golan Heights has not changed — deputy spokesman

US President Donald Trump earlier wrote on his official Twitter account that "after 52 years, it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights"

THE UNITED NATIONS, March 22. /TASS/. The United Nations has not changed its position on the status of the Golan Heights, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told a briefing on Friday.

US President Donald Trump earlier wrote on his official Twitter account that "after 52 years, it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and regional stability."

"We don't have any comment on the tweet that we saw yesterday," Haq said. "If you're asking what the UN policy on the Golan Heights is, then it's very clear it's the policy reflected in resolutions of the Security Council and relevant resolutions of the General Assembly," he added. "The status of the Golan Heights has not changed," he noted.

"It is up the members of the Security Council themselves to determine whether their resolutions have been breached or not. So we'll leave that matter in their hands," he said.
