Serbia’s European future depends on negotiations with Pristina, says president

The Serbs will not be permitted to the European Union without agreement with the Kosovans, according to Aleksandar Vucic

BELGRADE, March 21. /TASS/. Serbia’s European future depends on negotiations with Pristina. The Serbs will not be permitted to the European Union without agreement with the Kosovans, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told Reuters in an interview. The Tanjug news agency released a short video version of the interview.

"To us the European future depends on negotiations with Pristina and whether we will be able to reach any agreement with them once. No one will ever let us to Europe in any other way, people in Serbia should also know it, considering the consequences," Vucic said.

He noted the importance of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. "Every day and every week of delaying a solution on Kosovo contributes to the creation of conditions when one sparkle may set the whole region on fire, and the Western countries should understand it. We have many red lines, but I don’t want to talk about them, because they make negotiations impossible. We are not close to an agreement, there is no draft agreement, nothing of the kind exists at the moment, and I don’t want to destroy the chance for negotiations."

The Serbian leader stated that he hopes "to see the initiatives of Germany and France on the Kosovo issue in the near future."

Serbia’s foreign political course stipulates the preservation of friendly relations with Russia and China and the development of ties with the EU and the US. Belgrade intends to preserve its military neutrality, refusing to accede to NATO and other military blocs. This position draws objections in the West, in particular Serbia was repeatedly given to understand that Euro-integration is possible only when performing two conditions: the recognition of Kosovo’s independence and the end of friendly relations with Russia.
