Kazakhstan’s former president, Russian PM agree to maintain regular contacts

Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his resignation after almost 30 years in power

ASTANA, March 20. /TASS/. Kazakhstan’s first President Nursultan Nazarbayev held telephone talks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday and they agreed to continue regular contacts in the future, Kazakhstan’s presidential press service said.

"During the conversation, Russia’s head of government pointed out that he highly appreciates Nursultan Nazarbayev’s historic contribution in the establishment of Kazakh-Russian relations and development of the Eurasian integration," the statement said. "Nursultan Nazarbayev and Dmitry Medvedev agreed to maintain regular contacts in the future."

On Tuesday, Kazakhstan’s first president Nursultan Nazarbayev, 78, announced his surprise resignation since March 20 after 30 years in power. Senate Speaker Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, 65, was sworn in and assumed the post of the Central Asian country’s president on Wednesday, vowing to maintain Nazarbayev’s strategic course.
