Russian ambassador expects new Kazakh president to ensure policy continuity

Alexei Borodavkin stressed that Russia "is pleased to see that Kazakhstan’s international credibility is growing"

ASTANA, March 20. /TASS/. Russian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Alexei Borodavkin expects Kazakhstan’s new President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to ensure the continuity of the country’s policies.

"I would like to point out that it is a generational change in the Kazakh leadership but we hope that the country’s policies will remain the same and continuity will be ensured," Borodavkin told reporters on Wednesday.

He noted that it concerned the continuity of both domestic and foreign policies. "It is about ensuring political stability in Kazakhstan, social justice and economic prosperity. I certainly hope that alliance relations and integration between Russia and Kazakhstan will progress," the ambassador added.

Borodavkin stressed that Russia "is pleased to see that Kazakhstan’s international credibility is growing, the country has an active and meaningful position on the international stage."

On Wednesday, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was sworn in as Kazakhstan’s president following the resignation announcement Nursultan Nazarbayev had made on Tuesday. Nazarbayev said in his address to the country’s people that he would remain head of the Kazakh Security Council and leader of the Nur Otan party, as well as member of the Constitutional Council.

Nazarbayev became Kazakhstan’s first president in 1990 and was elected president in a nationwide election in 1991.

Tokayev earlier served as speaker of Kazakhstan’s upper house of parliament, prime minister and foreign minister, as well as a United Nations under secretary general.
