UK prepares new initiative on Brexit — TV

Barclay hopes that the new initiative would be sufficient to ensure that the deal on UK withdrawal from the European Union is approved by the country’s parliament

LONDON, February 20. /TASS/. The United Kingdom will put forward a new proposal on terms of the Brexit deal, comprised by by British Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, Sky News reported citing information obtained from Brexit Minister Stephen Barclay.

Barclay hopes that the new initiative would be sufficient to ensure that the deal on UK withdrawal from the European Union is approved by the country’s parliament and will help to take the entire process out of the deadlock.

According to the channel’s info, the UK government rejected a compromise deal named the Malthouse compromise after its author Kit Malthouse. The proposal, which extended the transition period by another year (until 2021) and redrafted the controversial backstop mechanism, will be discussed only during the London-Brussels talks to take place after the formal Brexit takes place on March 29.

Instead of backstop, rejected by the majority of UK parliament members, Malthouse suggested a free trade agreement between the United Kingdom and Ireland with as-yet-unknown technology to avoid customs checks on the Irish border.

The European Commission said on Tuesday that its President Jean-Claude Juncker will meet with UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday. British media expects that the sides would seek to make progress on the issue of backstop, which remains the major stumbling block for the deal’s approval by the House of Commons.
