The key income items of the Islamic State (IS, terror group, outlawed in Russia) have not changed substantially and continue to include hostage taking and trafficking in human organs, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday.
Nebenzya called on all countries to step up efforts to curb the group’s illegal financial activities. "We see some progress in the work to block terrorist financing channels by neighboring countries," he said. "The Islamic State’s revenues from hydrocarbons continue to fall for obvious reasons. However, last fall militants seized several fields in Deir ez-Zor province, which made it possible for them to resell certain amounts of energy products through a network of mediators."
According to Nebenzya, in general, the terror group’s key revenue items have not changed substantially recently. "Militants continue to take hostages for ransom, take part in drug trafficking, trade in agricultural products and human organs and sell cultural heritage items in black markets," he emphasized.
"For our part, we are determined to continue to be actively involved in global counter-terrorism efforts," he assured.
