Venezuela rejects final document of contact group meeting in Montevideo

According to president Maduro, the dialogue on settlement of the situation in the country "must be among people"

CARACAS, February 8. /TASS/. Caracas rejects a statement on the situation in Venezuela that was signed by the international contact group in Montevideo, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday.

"We refuse to sign this document, we don’t accept it," he said, adding that he is ready to cooperate with the contact group but "refuses to accept ideologization of international relations."

"Dialogue [on settlement of the situation in Venezuela] must be among people," he stressed.

The first meeting of the international contact group on Venezuela was held in Montevideo on Thursday. It was attended by a number of European Union nations, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Uruguay. Neither the Venezuelan authorities nor the opposition took part.

The contact group promised to ensure international guarantees for new presidential elections in Venezuela and guarantee swift delivery of humanitarian assistance.

President Maduro earlier rejected the very idea of new polls.
