Lavrov discusses issues of Syrian constitutional committee with Syrian opposition leader

Moscow also reiterated commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and to "the search for ways of overcoming the crisis through a... sustainable political process"

MOSCOW, February 7. /TASS/. Efforts towards the soonest launch of Syria’s Constitutional Committee were in focus of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with the president of Syria’s Tomorrow movement, Ahmad al-Jarba, the Russian foreign ministry said on Thursday.

"The sides discussed the development of the situation in and around Syria with a focus on efforts towards the soonest formation of the constitutional committee and the launch of its work in Geneva in conformity with the resolutions of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi and provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254," the ministry said. "The sides stressed the importance of efforts to create favorable conditions for socio-economic revival of the country and return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their homes."

Apart from that, Moscow reiterated its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and to "the search for ways of overcoming the crisis through an independent and sustainable political process among the Syrians," the ministry noted.

Also on Thursday, al-Jarba held consultations with Russian president’s envoy for the Middle East and African countries and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
