Germany has zero chances of becoming permanent UN Security Council member, says diplomat

Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the Munich Security Conference said there is "no need to harbor illusions"

BERLIN, January 17. / TASS /. Germany’s desire to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council is unlikely to come true. This is what Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the Munich Security Conference and a well-known German diplomat told journalists in Berlin on Thursday.

"Is it possible to fulfill this desire? The answer is no. There is no need to harbor illusions," he said.

According to the chairman, reforming the Security Council will take "a lot of effort" and that is incredibly difficult to accomplish. "I believe this is an illusion that can never become reality," Ischinger noted.

It was reported earlier that Germany and France would sign a new cooperation agreement on January 22. The deal will separately state the desire of both countries to ensure that Germany will get a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, which is currently made up of five states: Russia, Britain, China, the US, and France.
