Russia preparing to host trilateral summit with Iran, Azerbaijan

The previous summit was held in Tehran on November 1, 2017

MOSCOW, January 16. /TASS/. Russia is in the works to hold another three-way summit with Iran and Azerbaijan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a news conference on results of the year of 2018.

"Now it is our turn to host a trilateral summit. We are in preparations for such a summit. I can assure you that it will take place," Lavrov said.

"As for other formats with Azerbaijan, those talks have transitioned into a practical dimension. We should consider what additional value those formats could bear, since a format for the sake of a format will meet the interests of neither Azerbaijan nor Russia, nor any other possible participants," he added. "Should additional value be present in some form of our cooperation, we will be viewing this opportunity with pleasure."

The Russia-Iran-Azerbaijan summit was held in Tehran on November 1, 2017. The three leaders focused on a wide range of issues, in particular on energy cooperation, on solutions to the Syria crisis and on cooperation in the Caspian Sea. President Vladimir Putin invited his counterparts then to come to Russia for a next trilateral summit.
