Vucic, Putin to discuss cooperation in area of innovation

The Serbian president announced earlier that he expected his Russian counterpart to visit Belgrade on January 17

BELGRADE, January 10. /TASS/. Cooperation in the area of innovation, technological development and digital economy is expected to be one of the most important matters that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will discuss during the latter’s visit to Belgrade, the office of Serbian Minister in charge of innovations and technological development Nenad Popovic said in a statement following a meeting between the minister and Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Chepurin.

"Popovic and Chepurin agreed that apart from the energy sector, agriculture and trade, there was huge potential for cooperation in the area of innovation, technological development and digital economy. They stressed that it would definitely be one of the most important matters that President Vucic and President Putin will discuss," the statement reads.

According to Popovic, "Serbia considers Russia to be one of its most important strategic partners." The minister also pointed out that "Russia has always provided the strongest support to Serbia in protecting its key national interests. "Russia supports us as far as the Kosovo issue and the need to maintain Republika Srpska are concerned," Popovic said.

The Serbian president announced earlier that he expected his Russian counterpart to visit Belgrade on January 17. The two presidents last met in Moscow on October 2, 2018.

According to the Serbian media, the two countries plan to sign 20 agreements during the Russian president’s visit. The implementation of joint energy, infrastructure and innovation projects will also be the center of attention. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said earlier that an agreement on establishing a nuclear center in Serbia could be signed during Putin’s visit to the country.
