Turkey doesn’t rule out cooperation with Assad in case he wins elections - Cavusoglu

An agreement on a constitutional committee in Syria was reached at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi on January 30-31

DOHA /Qatar/, December 16. /TASS/. Turkey may look at possible cooperation with Syrian President Bashar Assad in case he wins the United Nations-brokered transparent and democratic elections in Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Sunday.

"We are against writing a constitution for the Syrians. Let us allow they write their constitution by themselves. If they need any help, we will help," he said at the 18th Doha Forum. "It is necessary to prepare the elections. They should be held under the United Nations auspices, be inclusive and involve all the Syrians both in and outside the country, including refugees."

"It is up to the Syrians to decide who will run their country based on the results of the elections," he said. When asked whether Ankara would be ready to cooperate with Syrian President Bashar Assad in case he is reelected president, Cavusoglu said, "If the elections are democratic and trustworthy, we will look at all options."

An agreement on a constitutional committee in Syria was reached at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi on January 30-31. The committee will be tasked to elaborate recommendations on amendments to the Syrian constitution. This will be followed by the United Nations-brokered general elections.
