Japan regrets situation regarding INF Treaty — top diplomat

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on December 4 that Washington will stop its obligations under the INF Treaty if Russia does not return to the execution of the agreement in 60 days

TOKYO, December 7. /TASS/. The Japanese government regrets the situation over the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty) and expects the conflict to be settled in the established 60-day period, Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Kono said at a press conference in Tokyo on Friday.

"The INF Treaty plays an important role in nuclear disarmament, so the established situation is extremely regrettable. We suppose that different things may happen in the established 60-day period and hope that all sides will effectively use this time," he noted.

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo stated on December 4 on the results of the meeting between the NATO foreign ministers in Brussels that Washington will stop its obligations under the INF Treaty if Russia does not return to the execution of the agreement in 60 days. Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted on December 5, answering journalists’ questions, that the American side did not provide any evidence of the violation of the INF Treaty that Russia allegedly committed.
