CHISINAU, December 3. /TASS/. Moldovan President Igor Dodon has expressed gratitude to Russia’s leadership for the decision to lift sanctions against Moldovan citizens who violated their periods of stay in the country.

"The agreement to lift sanctions against Moldovan citizens who violated rules for entry and exit from Russia was reached during my visit to Moscow which took place in October. I am grateful to Vladimir Putin, who supported my request," the Moldovan president said in a conversation with TASS.

He reiterated that the majority of almost 1 million Moldovan citizens who had to leave the country, which is seeing a long-term economic crisis, are staying in Russia.

"These are about 600,000 Moldovan citizens; about half of them violated the migration regime," the president specified. He reiterated that it is not the first pardon for Moldovan migrants that was reached at negotiations with the Russian president.

The Russian Interior Ministry press service reported that, in accordance with the Moldovan president’s request that he articulated during his official visit to Moscow, Moldovan citizens staying on Russian territory with violation of their periods of stay will be able to return to their motherland from January 1 to February 24, 2019, without being held administratively accountable for the violation of their periods of stay and without decisions banning their entry to Russia under Parts 4 and 8 Section 26 and Parts 12, 13 and 14 Section 27 of the Federal Law "The procedure for entering the Russian Federation and exiting the Russian Federation." In addition, the earlier made decisions banning their entrance to Russia will be revisited for the purpose of their abolishment or reduction starting from February 25, 2019.
