Bashar Assad will be welcome in South Ossetia any time, president says

Anatoly Bibilov that the visit can take place "at any moment"

MOSCOW, November 28. /TASS/. Syrian President Bashar Assad’s visit to South Ossetia is possible any time and work in this question is underway on the day-to-day basis, South Ossetia’s President Anatoly Bibilov told TASS.

"Assad’s visit is possible any moment. Both the Syrian leader and South Ossetia are prepared for that. It all depends on the window of opportunity he has bearing in mind the current situation in his country. There has been a confirmation that he will visit South Ossetia. The possibility of Bashar Assad’s visit to our republic is monitored every day," he said.

Bibilov added that work was in progress on opening South Ossetia’s embassy in Damascus and Syria’s embassy in Tskhinval. Currently it is in the phase of active discussions.

Syria recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on May 29. Syrian and South Ossetian foreign ministers Walid Muallem and Dmitry Medoyev met in Damascus on July 22 to sign an agreement on the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. South Ossetian President Anatoly Bibilov on July 23 paid an official visit to Syria. It was the first official visit by a South Ossetian delegation to Syria since 2011.
