French Foreign Ministry expresses concern over Kerch Strait incident

The French Foreign Ministry voiced its concern over the incident between Russia and Ukraine in the Kerch Strait

PARIS, November 26. /TASS/. The French Foreign Ministry voiced its concern on Monday over an incident on November 25 between the Russian and Ukrainian parties in the Kerch Strait calling on both sides to show maximum restraint and prevent military escalation.

"Based on our factual data, we believe that Russia’s use of force cannot be justified," a statement from the official spokesman for the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said.

The statement added that in view of the incident it urges "Russia and Ukraine to show maximum restraint and prevent military escalation."

The statement from the French ministry called on Russia to "release as soon as possible all detained Ukrainian sailors and to return to Ukraine the detained vessels as well," adding that "measures of inspecting vessels, introduced by Russian in the spring of 2018, obstruct the maritime transportation and the work of Ukrainian seaports."

"We call on Russia to observe the principles of an unimpeded navigation of vessels via the Kerch Strait as well as the navigation in the waters of the Sea of Azov," the ministry stated.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on November 25 that the Ukrainian warships Berdyansk, Nikopol and Yany Kapu had violated the Russian state border on Sunday morning and again attempted to carry out illegal maneuvers in Russia’s territorial waters later.

The Ukrainian vessels ignored legitimate demands of the Coast Guard of the FSB Border Service and the Black Sea Fleet to immediately halt, and stop performing dangerous maneuvers. A chase involving some gunfire had been used in order to stop the Ukrainian ships, which were detained in the Russian territorial waters.

Three of Ukrainian sailors were reported to sustain light wounds and received a medical assistance later. Criminal proceedings are being initiated for violating the state border of the Russian Federation.

The Treaty on the Legal Status of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, signed in 2003, confirmed their status as the domestic waters of Russia and Ukraine. The parties agreed on the joint usage and protection of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait and introducing restrictions on vessels belonging to third countries.
