Rejection of neutrality destabilizes situation in Moldova, says president

Earlier, Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip expressed his support for Moldova’s cooperation with NATO

MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. Moldova’s rejection of its neutral status may destabilize the situation in the region and in the country, Moldovan President Igor Dodon stated on Wednesday during a session of the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament).

"According to all surveys, the majority of the republic’s population is categorically against Moldova losing its neutral status and forming part of NATO," he said. Dodon stressed the need to strengthen and develop Moldova’s neutral status stipulated by the country’s constitution. "Any unbalanced action or attempt to stray away from the neutral status of the Republic of Moldova may significantly destabilize the country and put Moldova at constant risk for dozens of years, first and foremost, in the area of national and regional security," Dodon warned.

Earlier, Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip expressed his support for Moldova’s cooperation with NATO, stating that the country’s neutral status was "imposed" on Moldova after the Transnistrian conflict.

Currently, Moldova is cooperating with NATO on the basis of an individual partnership plan. At the end of last year, NATO established a liaison office in Chisinau. Dodon strongly criticized this move, forbidding the Moldovan army to participate in joint military drills with NATO. Members of the Democratic Party rejected all his initiatives concerning the national security strategy.
