UNITED NATIONS, November 20. /TASS/. Russia hopes that UN Secretary General's new envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen will draw on negotiations in Geneva, Sochi and Astana in his work, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vladimir Safronkov said on Monday at the UN Security Council session on Syria.

"We hope that the new envoy, whom we know as an experienced and unbiased diplomat, will base his work on the solid foundation laid on platforms in Geneva, Astana and Sochi," Safronkov said.

Current UN envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said in October that he will leave the post at the end of November for personal reasons. Norwegian diplomat Geir Pederson will succeed de Mistura. The UN Secretariat later said that the new envoy for Syria may only start working in December.
