Moldova’s socialists want closer relations with Russia

The Moldova’s Party of Socialists made public its program for the upcoming parliamentary elections in February 2019

CHISINAU, November 18. /TASS/. Moldova must have closer relations with Russia and become a full-fledged member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), but maintain good relations with the European Union as well, according to a resolution passed by a thousands-strong rally organized by Moldova’s Party of Socialists in central Chisinau on Sunday.

The party made public its program for the upcoming parliamentary elections in February 2019. President Igor Dodon, who was the party’s leader before being elected head of state, called on his supporters to help the party sweep the elections. He said the Socialists know how to improve life in the country and expressed confidence they would ultimately come to power.

"We know our opponents. That is why it is important not only to win but also to defend the victory. So, we must be ready to gather again," Dodon said and called on his supporters "to be ready for protests."

The goals committed to paper in the party’s program are to lower the retirement age, to increase wages and social allowances, to ensure free medical services and education. Foreign policy goals are to establish closer relations with Russia, to join the EAEU as a full-fledged member and to maintain good relations with the European Union. The Socialists also promised to keep the country’s constitutional neutrality in place and close down NATO’s mission that was opened by the ruling pro-European coalition.

The Socialists also pledged to settle the Transnistrian problem, to strengthen the country’s statehood and outlaw parties and movements that advocate unification with Romania.
