New Caledonia votes to remain part of France, says President Macron

Experts and local authorities project that 56-59% of voters have rejected separating from France

PARIS, November 4. /TASS/. The majority of voters in the New Caledonia referendum have chosen to remain part of France, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a televised address from Paris on Sunday.

"I would like to say how proud I am as President of the Republic that the majority of Caledonian people have chosen France. It is a sign of trust in the French Republic, in the future of the French Republic and its values," Macron said, noting a high voter turnout.

According to President, "there is no other path than that of dialogue" on the future of the South Pacific archipelago that has been part of France since 1853.

Macron added that the government would offer holding political consultations to New Caledonia’s political forces in the near future. French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe will meet with officials in New Caledonia to discuss future plans.
