Outgoing UN envoy to report to Security Council on Syria on November 19

The humanitarian situation in the country will be discussed on November 28

UN, November 2. /TASS/. Outgoing UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will deliver his final report on Syrian settlement to the UN Security Council on November 19, according to the schedule of China’s Security Council presidency this month.

The schedule was unveiled by China’s UN envoy Ma Zhaoxu on Thursday evening.

The Chinese diplomat told reporters that "the situation in Syria will be discussed three times this month, during sessions devoted to chemical weapons, humanitarian problems and political settlement."

The November 19 session on political settlement will be of particular importance, because de Mistura earlier said he would deliver a report about his last month as the UN special envoy and the ongoing effort to create the constitutional committee in Syria.

The humanitarian situation in the country will be discussed on November 28, and de Mistura may make a speech at this session too, if necessary.

Among other issues to be raised during UN Security Council sessions in November will be the consolidation of the global community for peace and stability and latest developments in Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Somali and Eritrea.

"We need to find ways to improve our collective effort to solve global problems. That’s why I believe that open debates at the UN Security Council on strengthening the principle of multilateralism will be very useful, they will be held on November 9," he said. "The other open debate [on November 20] will be devoted to peace and stability in Africa."

According to the schedule, on November 21 the UN Security Council will discuss situation around the report by Committee 1718 on sanctions against North Korea, whose adoption was blocked by Washington in September.
