MOSCOW, October 31. /TASS/. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has discussed the possibility of including CSTO in UN peacekeeping activities with United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations Carlos Loitey, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is an intergovernmental military alliance that brings together the post-Soviet states of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

"The sides exchanged opinions on issues of increasing effectiveness of UN activities on the peacekeeping track. Both sides expressed interest in involving CSTO. They considered the UN secretary general's peacekeeping initiatives and the activities of several UN missions, including the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights," the foreign ministry said.

Loitey arrived on a visit to Russia on an invitation from Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Gen. Valery Gerasimov. The UN official will observe CSTO peacekeeping military drills "Unbreakable Brotherhood 2018" held in the Russian Urals city of Yekaterinburg. He will also meet with representatives of the CSTO secretariat and Russian officials.
