New UN special envoy must be acceptable for Damascus, says Russian diplomat

MOSCOW, October 25./TASS/. The candidacy of a new UN special envoy for Syria who is to replace Staffan de Mistura, must be acceptable for the Syrian authorities, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

"We confirm that we aimed at constructive cooperation with Staffan de Mistura’s successor, he must be appointed by the UN secretary general. We assume that the candidacy of the new special envoy must be acceptable for the authorities of the Syrian Arab Republic as it is envisaged by the fundamental principles of UN mediation," Zakharova said. She also stressed that the new UN special envoy must go his job "in strict compliance with the UN Charter and the decisions of the UN Security Council".
