Russia in talks with Argentina on joint anti-drug operations, says ambassador

In February, it was reported that the law enforcement agencies from Russia and Argentina conducted a joint sting operation to bust a delivery channel of a batch of narcotics to the European market

MOSCOW, October 24. /TASS/. Russia negotiates joint operations against drug trafficking with Argentina, Russia’s Ambassador in Buenos Aires Dmitry Feoktistov said on Wednesday.

"We are in active dialogue with our Argentine counterparts, persuading them that this success should be forged and that more sting operations should be carried out, like controlled supply of a large batch of drugs through Argentina or from Argentina to Russia, so that we could expose all the supply chains connecting drug traffickers to users," Feoktistov said at a video conference for lawmakers from the Russian and Argentine upper houses of parliament - the Federation Council and Senate.

In late February, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that the law enforcement agencies from Russia and Argentina had conducted a joint sting operation to bust a delivery channel of a large batch of narcotics to the European market. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, a large batch of drugs (362 kg of cocaine) detected in one of the buildings of the Russian embassy in Buenos Aires belonged to a technical staff employee who had ended his tenure by that time.

Later, six suspects were detained. Of those, three men (Vladimir Kalmykov, Ishtimir Khudzhamov and Ali Abyanov) were arrested in Russia, two more in Argentina and another one (the gang leader Andrei Kovalchuk) in Germany.
