Lebanon supports Russian initiative on return of Syrian refugees — top diplomat

Beirut supports Moscow’s initiative on the return of Syrian refugees to their home country

MOSCOW, August 20. /TASS/. Beirut supports Moscow’s initiative for the return of Syrian refugees to their home country and is interested in its success, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said at the Monday talks with Russian top diplomat Sergey Lavrov.

"I would like to thank Russia for putting forward an initiative aimed at resolving the refugee issue," he said. "Russia’s position confirms its principle-based approach to resolving the situation in the region, as the refugee issue has been making the matters worse," Bassil added.

"We are interested in the initiative’s success and support it," the Lebanese foreign minister noted. "We are guided by the principles of the fight against terrorism and protect the principles of pluralism. What Russia is doing at the moment emphasizes its historic role in the region and confirms that Moscow is following its principles not only in word but also in deed," Bassil said.
