Damascus urges Idlib residents to protest against militants — paper

Situation in Idlib totally differs from Eastern Ghouta and Daraa, where the government had agreed on ceasefire with the armed opposition

MOSCOW, August 16. /TASS/. Syria’s Minister of State for National Reconciliation Ali Heidar has urged the population of Idlib Governorate to launch popular unrest against the control of the armed groups, the online edition of the Al Watan daily said on Thursday.

After meeting with the Iranian ambassador in Damascus, Ali Heidar said the situation in Idlib totally differed from the situation in Eastern Ghouta and Daraa Governorate, where the government had agreed on cessation of hostilities with the armed opposition.

"Idlib has become a haven for the most radical forces in the camp of anti-government units, which cannot become part of the Syrian government’s political project," he said. "No mutual understanding and agreements is possible with this category of militants," he stressed.

With that in view, the minister urged the residents of Idlib who want to reunite with the Fatherland, "to launch acts of protest with an aim to banish extremists from their regions".

On August 10, the Al Watan said terrorists from Jabhat al-Nusra (outlawed in Russia) and its allies had conducted arrests of the field commanders of the armed opposition who had contacted Syrian military commanders to agree on terms of capitulation.

On Thursday, Syrian military opened a humanitarian corridor for civilians in the area of Abu al-Duhur.

Idlib is the only Syrian region that remains in the hands of illegal armed groups. In 2017, a northern de-escalation zone was set up there, with Turkey responsible for maintaining stability in it. Together with Russia and Iran, Turkey is guarantor of the Syrian ceasefire.
