International terrorists may have goals in Latin America — Russian diplomat

According to the diplomat, the Argentine authorities are aware of the emerging threats and pay more and more attention to the issue

BUENOS AIRES, August 10. /TASS/. Foreign terrorists are considering the possibility of using Latin American countries to achieve their criminal goals, Russia’s recently appointed ambassador to Buenos Aires, Dmitry Feoktistov, said on Thursday.

"We have information indicating that terrorists probably consider using Latin America for their criminal goals. Among other things, this includes the creation of bases for recreation and treatment of foreign terrorists, collection of funds, recruitment and propaganda," the ambassador said at a news conference, devoted to handing over his diplomatic credentials to the Argentine government.

According to the Russian diplomat, the Argentine authorities are aware of the emerging threats and pay more and more attention to the issue.

"In this respect, I submitted to Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie on Monday a draft intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the fight against terrorism, prepared by Russia," he said. "We expect the Argentine side to study it in a prompt and constructive manner, so that we could sign it without delay."

The ambassador added that Russia also submitted a draft cybersecurity cooperation agreement to the Southern American nation.

"Two weeks ago, we received the Argentine side’s amendments. We expect this document to be agreed as soon as possible and suggest holding expert consultations on the issue at the highest level possible," he said.
