Helsinki talks show global issues can be tackled through dialogue — Austrian chancellor

The US delegation included Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton

MOSCOW, July 17. /TASS/. The Helsinki summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump has proved that global issues can only be resolved through dialogue, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Twitter on Tuesday.

"[The meeting in] Helsinki is a signal that global challenges can be tackled only through dialogue," the tweet reads. "Expanding cooperation between two superpowers - Russia and the US - is indispensable, particularly for ensuring nuclear disarmament and finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict, while protecting Israel’s security interests," Kurz added.

The first full-fledged talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States took place in Finland’s capital of Helsinki on Monday. The one-on-one meeting between Putin and Trump lasted more than two hours, later delegation members joined the presidents for a working lunch. The Russian delegation was composed of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov. The US delegation included Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton. The expanded session also took about two hours.
