Trump presents Putin with Ovechkin’s NHL jersey and ice hockey puck

US president’s ice hockey gifts for the Russian leader came after Putin’s football gifts for Trump

HELSINKI, July 16. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump presented his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday with a team jersey of Alexander Ovechkin, a Russian ice hockey star playing for NHL’s Washington Capitals, as well as with an ice hockey puck.

"President Trump presented (Putin) with Ovechkin’s jersey and a puck," Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists after summit talks between Trump and Putin in Helsinki on Monday.

Led by Captain Ovechkin, NHL’s Washington Capitals won earlier in the year the prestigious Stanley Cup beating in the playoff finals the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoff series.

US president’s ice hockey gifts for the Russian leader came after Putin’s football gifts for Trump.

During a bilateral news conference after their summit talks earlier in the day, Putin presented Trump with the official ball of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Telstar 18 by Adidas. The Russian president said this present was relevant since the United States will be hosting matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In mid-June a unified bid on behalf of the United States, Canada and Mexico won most of the votes to be granted the right to host matches of the 2016 FIFA World Cup. The voting took place at the 68th FIFA Congress and the only competitor to the joint bid was a bid from the Moroccan Football Association.

US President Trump accepted the ball from Putin saying he would definitely give it to his son Barron and then passed the ball to his wife Melania Trump during the news conference.

This summer Russia hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup, which kicked off in Moscow with a remarkable opening show at Luzhniki Stadium on the evening of June 14 and ended with a spectacular final match, played also at the Luzhniki Stadium, where France soundly defeated Croatia 4-2 to clinch the much-coveted World Cup Trophy.
