Moldova not to "make friends with West against Russia," president vows

Chisinau will be "making friends with everyone," but does not want to be used against any other country, Dodon said

MOSCOW, July 13. /TASS/. Moldova will not be "friends with the West against Russia," President Igor Dodon assured Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Saturday.

Chisinau will be "making friends with everyone," but does not want to be used against any other country, he said.

"We are not going to be friends with the West against Russia," the Moldovan president said. "It is my position. Despite the fact that in the country there is still a government and parliamentary majority that might think otherwise, we will be holding elections in a few months and the situation will change."

Dodon suggested discussing bilateral cooperation at the talks. Among the benefits of recent developments, he mentioned an increase in Moldovan exports to Russia, a solution to the migrant issue and "serious shifts over Transnistria."

In addition, he pointed out that integration processes within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), an assembly of post-Soviet republics, were very important for Moldova.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dodon congratulated Putin on the good performance of the Russia national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

"Believe me, the entire Moldova was rooting, not just the president. We all were rooting and are pleased with the result you have achieved," he said.
