Moldovan top diplomat calls for improving relations with Russia

When speaking about Moldova’s priorities, the diplomat also mentioned relations with neighboring countries

CHISINAU, July 9. /TASS/. Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Tudor Ulianovschi has called for improving relations with Russia at a meeting with Moldovan ambassadors held in the country’s capital of Chisinau.

"As for relations with the Russian Federation, there is no alternative to constant dialogue," Ulianovschi said, as cited by his press service. "At the same time, it is important to protect our national interests, ensuring respect for the country’s sovereignty and its plans concerning European Union integration," the Moldovan top diplomat added.

Ulianovschi pointed out that Moldova needed to get rid of the image of a former Soviet state and establish itself as "a state belonging to the Western civilization, which is part of the European family." The Moldovan foreign minister also emphasized the need to maintain "strategic dialogue with the United States" that, in his words, has been assisting the government in reforming the country.

When speaking about Moldova’s priorities, Ulianovschi also mentioned relations with neighboring countries. "Romania is our most reliable ally, interested in our integration with the European Union, modernization and stability. Ukraine, with whom we have common border, problems and aspirations, is one of the parties involved in resolving the Transnistria issue," the top diplomat added.

On Monday, Moldovan ambassadors are expected to meet with the country’s Prime Minister Pavel Filip, while President Igor Dodon will receive them on July 11.

In 2017, the Moldovan government took a number of steps against Russia, particularly expelling Russian diplomats from Chisinau and banning Russian artists, cultural workers, politicians and journalists from entering the country. Moldovan President Igor Dodon, who stands for restoring strategic partnership with Moscow, condemned those steps.
