North Korea cancels high-level talks with South due to ongoing drills — Yonhap

North Korea also called into question a possible summit with the United States

MOSCOW, May 15. /TASS/. North Korea has said it is cancelling high-level talks with the South scheduled for May 16 because of the South Korean-US military drills, Yonhap said on Tuesday.

"This exercise targeting us, which is being carried out across South Korea and targeting us, is a flagrant challenge to the Panmunjom Declaration and an intentional military provocation running counter to the positive political development on the Korean Peninsula," Yonhap quoted a KCNA report.

North Korea also called into question a possible summit with the United States. "The United States will also have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-U.S. summit in light of this provocative military ruckus jointly conducted with the South Korean authorities," the KCNA said.

The high-level talks between the two Koreas were to be held in Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone on Wednesday. Yonhap said earlier the sides were supposed to discuss measures to implement the agreements reached at the intra-Korean summit in April.

The leaders of the United States and North Korea were to meet on June 12 in Singapore.
