Belarus may expand its nuclear plant to 4 power units

Most people in the region where the plant is located support the idea of expanding the project, the deputy prime minister indicated

SOCHI, May 14. /TASS/. Belarus may increase the power generating capacity of its nuclear power plant, which is about to go into full-scale commercial operation in the Ostrovets district, the country’s western Grodno region - the government may order construction of two more power units in addition to the two units that are already there, Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko said on Monday.

"We think these two units are the first ones," he said. "Two more units will follow suit."

Most people in the region where the plant is located support the idea of expanding the project, the Deputy Prime Minister indicated.

"I’m not exaggerating," Semashko said. "As much as 90% of the population is glad we’re building the plant because this will be a very nice city and everything there will be safe and appropriate."

"That’s why public opinion in Belarus is in favor of this plant’s project," she said.
