UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd tenders resignation — media

Prime Minister Theresa May has accepted the resignation

LONDON, April 30. /TASS/. UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd tendered resignation on Sunday amid a deportation scandal, Sky News reported.

"[Prime Minister] Theresa May has accepted the resignation of Amber Rudd as Home Secretary," the channel quoted a Downing Street spokesperson as saying.

"Ms Rudd's departure is a major blow for Mrs May, who publicly declared her ‘full confidence’ in her ally as recently as Friday," Sky News said.

The immigration scandal, dubbed the Windrush row, began about two weeks ago, when it emerged that some migrants, who arrived in the UK between the late 1940s and the 1970s, had been declared illegal immigrants and threatened with deportation.

Later it became known that the Home Office had targets for deporting illegal immigrants. Rudd testified before the House of Commons last week that she was not aware of those targets. However, Guardian later published a report, based on a document it had managed to obtain, which demonstrated that Rudd was aware of them.

Rudd’s resignation is the fourth in the UK Cabinet in six months.
