Putin signs into law bill toughening penalties for corruption in sports

The new law stipulates a prison term for those found guilty of corruption of between eight and 15 years

MOSCOW, July 4. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law on Monday a draft law toughening responsibility for corruption in Russian sports stipulating penalties from financial fines to prison terms.

The new law, which comes as an amendment to the Russian Criminal Code, stipulates among other things a prison term for sports officials and all affiliated persons of between eight and 15 years for accepting a bribe of over one million rubles ($15,700).

The bill was passed by lawmakers from the Russian parliament’s lower chamber, the State Duma, on June 17 and approved by the upper chamber, the Federation Council, on June 29.
