RIO DE JANEIRO, August 7. /TASS/. Vitalina Batsarashkina of Russia has won silver in 10m air pistol women’s shooting at the Rio 2016 Olympics on Sunday.
Batsarashkina, 19, scored 197.1 points to finish second. Olympic gold went to Mengxue Zhang of China, 25, who set an Olympic record in the finals with 199.4 points.
The won by Batsarashkina was no surprise, Russian Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko told TASS.
"I cannot say that the medal was a surprise," Mutko said. "Shooting, like fencing, have been rather successful at world championships and World Cup legs in the recent time, which could not be said about the Olympic Games. So, this time very serious training preceded. A perfect center was built for that in Novogorsk. Vitalina is a young athlete but she already has world experience, stable mental health, self-confidence. So, the result was not a surprise."
"Naturally, it was difficult to compete with Chinese athletes in the finals - they have no nerves," the minister said. "Shooting, platform diving - the Chinese are the strongest. I think it is a big success, so, I my congratulations. I hope the day will be successful."
Batsarashkina’s medal is the second for the Russia national team at the Rio Olympics. On Saturday, Russian judoka Beslan Mudranov defeated Yeldos Smetov of Kazakstan in men -60 kg judo contest to win the gold medal.
Vitalina Batsarashkina has been competing for the Russian team since 2011. She is bronze medalist of the 2014 European Championships Juniors and silver medalist of the 2015 World Cup stage. In the same year, she won gold at the European Championships Junior.
