RIO DE JANEIRO, August 3. /TASS/. International Olympic Committee has included karate, surfing, baseball/softball, sport climbing, and skateboarding in the programme of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
On Wednesday, a session of the IOC in Rio passed a unanimous decision on the expansion of the Summer Olympics format.
Inclusion of these disciplines in the Olympic programme envision eighteen more sets of medals and competition of 474 athletes for them.
IOC Vice-President John Coats, the president of the Tokyo Games coordination committee said the finalized plan for sports facilities for tournaments in the five disciplines would be presented in December. He stressed his conviction that karate, karate, surfing, baseball/softball, sport climbing, and skateboarding would make the 2020 Summer Olympic Games the most innovative ones in the history of the Olympic movement.
Coats pointed out the extension of the Olympic programme, saying the new disciplines would be added to it and would not replace other sports.
